Welcome to… Boise.city

Boise began its history as a small wooded area along the Oregon Trail.  By 1862, the discovery of gold brought miners to the mountains, and Boise became a supply post. In 1863, during the Civil War, the government established Fort Boise, and the following year the city was incorporated.

By 1868, following several gold strikes, permanent residents began to settle in the area.  After the gold rush, Boise’s isolation and dry climate became significant factors for existing residents. Irrigation systems were established and a town was built along the river. Railway service was not established until 1925.

Following its use as a military base during World War II, and its annexation of additional land, Boise became well-populated, attracting new residents with its continental climate and steady commercial growth.

Today, Boise is headquarters to many manufacturing and technology firms. Residents and visitors recognize the city as an outstanding cultural and performing arts center. Boise has also been recognized by Forbes, Men’s Health, and U.S. News and World Reports as one of the top places to live and work.
